Albanian PM Condemns UK Asylum Plan, Points to Brexit Shift

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has strongly criticized the UK's proposed "return hubs" for refused asylum seekers in third countries, suggesting that post-Brexit Britain has entered a troubling phase. In a recent interview, Rama stated that the concept of the UK seeking external locations to process asylum claims would have been unthinkable just a decade ago.

Rama attributed this shift to a change in public discourse in Britain since Brexit, where previously unacceptable ideas have become normalized. He described the situation as "totally unacceptable, totally ridiculous, totally shameful," lamenting the change in the UK's international image.

The "return hubs" scheme, proposed by UK's opposition leader, involves establishing centers in a third country to process the claims of individuals whose asylum applications have been rejected in the UK after exhausting all legal avenues. Rama explicitly stated that Albania would not participate in such a scheme, reiterating a consistent stance maintained despite requests from previous British leaders.

He contrasted this position with Albania's agreement to a similar arrangement with Italy, emphasizing the unique and historical relationship between the two nations. Rama highlighted Italy's unwavering support for Albania since the collapse of its communist regime, fostering a deep sense of loyalty and gratitude.

Rama's comments coincide with Albania's progress towards EU membership. The country's accession negotiations have accelerated due to a perceived shift in European policymakers' approach following Russia's actions in Ukraine. Rama believes that Albania could complete negotiations by 2027 and join the EU by 2030.

He also shared his perspective on the potential impact of a Donald Trump presidency on Europe, suggesting that Trump's disruptive approach could serve as a wake-up call for the continent.

Later this year, Rama plans to embark on a tour to thank diaspora communities for their participation in recent elections. He also hopes to attract Albanians back to their homeland, citing improved economic conditions.

Despite his achievements, Rama faces criticism regarding corruption and potential authoritarian tendencies. While these allegations are dismissed by supporters and officials in Brussels, some observers express concerns about his long tenure as leader.
